California is a so-called majority minority state. Whites compose less than 40 percent of the population.

If you were a politician running in California, you'd probably want to appeal to minorities, particularly the Latino community, the state's largest ethnic group. Even in a Republican primary, appealing to brown folks isn't a bad idea.

Donald Trump, who has said he intends to make a big impression in the biggest state, might have just alienated more than 60 percent of the Golden State's population by choosing a white nationalist as one of his California delegates.

Oops?

The Republican nominee's campaign says the inclusion of the name of William Johnson, chair of the American Freedom Party, on its list of California's delegates was made in error.

“Yesterday the Trump campaign submitted its list of California delegates to be certified by the Secretary of State of California,” the camp said in a statement this afternoon. “A database error led to the inclusion of a potential delegate that had been rejected and removed from the campaign's list in February 2016.”

Do you believe them?

After all, this is coming from a guy who took his time distancing himself from the KKK's endorsement of his presidential aspirations. It is coming from a guy who called Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals.

In a statement sent to the L.A. Weekly and other outlets today, the Democratic National Committee pounced on Johnson's inclusion.

“Donald Trump is the candidate that will Make America Hate Again,” said DNC national press secretary Mark Paustenbach. “Trump’s racist, xenophobic candidacy continues to fuel a resurgence of white nationalism in the United States, and to elevate a man like this shows that Trump has neither the temperament nor judgment to serve as president.”

The American Freedom Party says it “exists to represent the political interests of White Americans.”

Johnson, in an interview with Mother Jones, which broke today's news, didn't seem to think his inclusion was an error.

He told the liberal publication he received a congratulatory email from Trump's California delegate coordinator, Katie Lagomarsino.

“I just hope to show how I can be mainstream and have these views,” he said. “I can be a white nationalist and be a strong supporter of Donald Trump and be a good example to everybody.”
