That buzz about a possible Banksy show in Los Angeles this month turned out to be false, it would seem.

The British street art superstar says on his website that he will conduct an “an artist's residency on the streets of New York.” And a tweet today depicts Banksy art right in NYC's Chinatown:

Banksy seems to have been teasing street art, using the theme “better out than in” during the late summer and early fall. At least one piece was spotted in Los Angeles.

But now it looks like the hype that left L.A. news media outlets breathless was all for New York's sake. (We had our suspicions about this and kept mum — for the record).

Our sister publication Village Voice today broke the news that the spray can king is “going up” in the Big Apple.

In 2011 Banksy came to town for the Academy Awards. His documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop was up for an Oscar (it did not win), and his art cropped up around town in the weeks before the big show.

Since then, Banksy Fever has become an epidemic in the City of Angels.
