Destroy Boys Live Up to Their Name at Coachella: Sacramento indie punks Destroy Boys rocked the Sonora Stage on Saturday at Coachella Weekend One, and we caught up with guitarist Violet Mayugba shortly afterwards…

How did the first set go?

Oh my god, it was amazing. It was so cool. It was very overwhelming because we don’t have a lot of festival experience. But it was so cool. Everyone treated us so well. The crowd was awesome. It was just, overall, super fun.

Had you been to Coachella before?

No, never.

Have you played any outdoor festivals?

Yeah, we’d done Riot Fest before – that’s the biggest one we’ve ever done. We’ve done quite a few smaller ones. We did Sad Summer Fest for a little bit. But Coachella is “the one.” I’ve been telling a lot of people, when I was a little kid Coachella was the pinnacle of success for bands in my eyes. So the fact that we’re doing it now, and the fact that we get to do it twice, is really awesome.

There wasn’t a lot of punk rock there this year. How do you think the Coachella crowd compared to, say, Riot Fest?

I think they were a little less rowdy. Riot Fest people were starting to pile on each other. But we had a huge pit, people were dancing, and people actually knew the words which was a huge, welcome surprise for us. It was awesome. Everyone was smiling and having fun, so we were happy.

And you get to do it all over again…

Yes, I know. I’m so glad. I feel like we shook the nerves off a little bit and now we’re going to have a great time.

Do you plan to do anything different with your set at Weekend two?

I was going to talk to the band about that today actually. We’ve been rehearsing the set, and working so hard to make it perfect. So I don’t know if there’s anything we could do. But I’m kinda like, man should we mess it around? I guess we’ll see.

Did you get to check anyone out at Weekend one, or are you planning to check anyone out this weekend?

My favorite band that I saw was Knocked Loose on Sunday. They’re one of my favorite bands ever and they shouted us out twice during their set which totally made me cry because I’m a huge fan. I watched the Linda Lindas. I saw Noname, Willow – just so many great bands and so many great ladies performing.

What do you have planned for the rest of the year?

Actually yesterday, we announced our first ever arena tour supporting Blink 182 and Turnstile, so that’s something. That is totally crazy. We’re losing our minds over that. We’re going to Europe before that, and also after that a whole bunch. Then I think we have some US stuff that’s not quite announced but we’ll get there soon. But yeah, lots of new music. We’re working on a new record right now. Lots, lots, of touring. That’s what we like to do.
