Despite California pushing up COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to include seniors over 65 years old, Mayor Eric Garcetti said only healthcare workers and employees/residents in skilled nursing facilities are currently eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations in L.A. County.

The county is currently in Phase 1A of vaccine distribution and will not move forward to vaccinate seniors over 65 until Phase 1B—a phase that includes those working in high risk sectors such as education, childcare, emergency services and food and agriculture.

“We’re working around the clock to get vaccines to every Angeleno equitably, safely and soon,” Garcetti said in a briefing Thursday. “Don’t try to cut the line, don’t try make a deal. Please be patient and know that the vaccine will come.”

Los Angeles Public Health said that they “near the end” of Phase 1A and are “the current priority is to complete vaccinations of Phase 1A.”

Additionally, Garcetti announced that the Dodger Stadium mass vaccination site would officially open Friday, January 15.

“We’re helping open up and we’ll be running at Dodger Stadium a vaccination site… that will be one of the biggest in the country, if not the biggest in the country,” Garcetti said. “This is a site as we’ve seen at Dodger Stadium, that can get people through safely, conveniently and most importantly, rapidly.”

Dodger Stadium is no longer testing for COVID-19 as the site transitioned to focus on vaccinations.
