A man who targeted a family in a shooting rampage, killing a father and one of his sons, was presumed to be armed, dangerous and on-the-loose tonight, police said. The suspect was identified by Inglewood police as 55-year-old Desmond John Moses.

The Inglewood attack, resulting in a critically injured mother, who tried unsuccessfully to save the 4-year-old boy by running away with him while wounded despite having taken gunfire to both of her legs, and two other critically wounded kids, was preceded by a raging fire on the property where it happened, police said:

According to an Inglewood police statement police first responded to the location about 4 a.m. in the 4900 block of W. 99th Street based on 911 calls of gunfire there.

At first it wasn't clear if the suspect was still on the property or if his body was in the burning back house, and a SWAT team was called out while some neighbors were evacuated, according to reports.

However, police say they believe Moses is at-large tonight. Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta told reporters at the scene the suspect lived in that back house. The family apparently lived in a front duplex.

Reports indicated that the suspect might have opened fire on the front residence from outside. The chief told reporters “the father was in a position of shielding the children as officers came into the scene.”

NBC Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Times say Moses had a dispute with the property's owner, with the Times saying he was evicted Tuesday.

News footage showed the mother in an apparent state of shock and disbelief in the back of an ambulance after the attack.

According to the Inglewood PD, the targets included:

[Added at 8:35 p.m.]: Police identified the father as Filimon Lamas.

Earlier they said the suspect wore “a dark baseball cap and possibly a 'painter's' mask over his face” during the attack.

[Update at 11:56 p.m.]: The chief told reporters a body has indeed been found in the rubble of the residence in back and that it might belong to Moses.

Authorities apparently had trouble finding it because there was so much stuff inside the place. The suspect was reportedly a hoarder.

[Update at 11:33 p.m. Sunday]: Authorities said the man found in the rubble had on body armor and was holding a .38 caliber handgun registered to Moses in his left hand.

The father, 30-year-old Filimon Lamas, was reportedly the co-owner of the circa-1957 Chips cafe in Hawthorn, known for its googie architecture.

His surviving wife was identified as 28-year-old Gloria Lamas.

[Added at 5:28 p.m. on Monday]: Inglewood police say a fund has been set up to help the Lamas family. We're guessing it's for funeral services and hospitalization:
