When we heard that an Orange County city councilman named his dog Muhammad to make a political statement about freedom of speech in America, we were a little wistful.

After all, Latinos used to be the favorite whipping boys of wacko O.C. right wingers. We're lonely: We haven't been bashed in, like, days.

San Juan Capistrano Councilman Derek Reeve ignited a firestorm earlier this month when he let out at a council meeting that he had named his dog Muhammad. In Islam …

… the dog is a dirty beast. This would be taken as a deep show of disrespect by many of the Muslim faith.

Reeve says he named his dog Muhammad to teach his children a lesson about freedom of speech in America.

Derek Reeve.

Derek Reeve.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, along with fellow Capistrano Councilman Larry Kramer, are asking for him to apologize.

According to a post subsequently removed at Patch, Reeve mentioned during the Sept. 6 meeting that “Muhammad is the bitch” of his two new Basset Hounds, which he named “Muhammad and America.”

Later he reportedly backpedaled. He was quoted as saying, “America is actually the female dog,” according to the Orange County Register.

Okay, Derek. We all know who the bitch with his foot in his mouth is here. Bad councilman.
