Entering its second decade of existence, the Los Angeles Derby Dolls track roller derby league is looking for a new home.

Its lease at its longtime venue the Doll Factory in Historic Filipinotown is coming to an end because the property's owner wants to build a mixed-use project with 200 housing units. The good news is that the league has a little more time – until the end of April – to find new digs, says co-founder Rebecca Ninburg.

Until then the L.A. women of roller derby are raising mad cash:

Its Indiegogo campaign seeks a whopping $100,000 and has already amassed about one-third of that in little more than a week.

Ninburg explained that the 150-skater organization will need to put down a lot of cash on a large venue – 6,000 square feet are needed for the track alone – and then get various city permits. “One-hundred thousand is just to get us into the space,” she told us:

All the arenas in town are cost prohibitive We'll also need a naming sponsor to help subsidize our move. We're looking for sponsors and people who will really fit with our brand, which is about empowering women and supporting women's sports.

But a planned March end to the league's run at 1910 W. Temple St. has been extended to April, she said, including a scheduled, April 19 event there. The league has matches set for March 1 and March 8 too.

In the meantime the Derby Dolls is moving forward with nonprofit, 501(c)(3) status, which should make the league's life a little easier when it comes to taxes and, yes, finding that new place to live.

“I appreciate the time we've been here in Filipinotown,” Ninburg says. “It's been really, really awesome.”
