Correctional Deputy Dies in Suspected DUI Crash Near Auzerais Avenue

SAN JOSE, CA (July 19, 2023) – Early Saturday morning, a two-vehicle collision involving a suspected DUI driver on Highway 87 claimed the life of Deputy Arturo Romero.

The fatal crash happened around 4:50 a.m. along the southbound State Highway 87 near Auzerais Avenue.

Allegedly, a 2009 Toyota Sienna minivan started driving in the wrong way and collided head-on with a 2021 Honda Accord.

Unfortunately, the first responders declared the driver of the Honda dead at the scene. He was later identified by the sheriff’s office as 51-year-old Arturo “Kiki” Romero. Romero has been working for 24 years as a correctional officer and deputy of San Jose County.

Meanwhile, authorities arrested the 26-year-old male Toyota driver from San Jose after being treated for minor injuries. Authorities charged the driver with felony DUI.
