Actor Dennis Hopper filed for divorce from his wife Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court. He cited irreconcilable differences for the split from his wife of 14 years, Victoria Hopper.

In a bizarre and arguably sensationalist twist, the Huffington Post reports that the actor, who has been reported to be ill, is facing his “final days surrounded by family and friends” and that he is “mentally incapacitated.” It's an odd pronouncement because, if he's on his deathbed, why would he file for divorce (from family and friend, no less)? And how would he find the energy or clarity to file if he's a mental case? What's more, an LA Weekly source disputes any contention that he's out of his mind and doesn't know what he's doing.

The source described seeing Hopper at an event in late December and that he was “lucid” and “walking around” and “clearly knew what he was doing.” (Maybe those were the days before his “final days”).

Frankly, the HuffPo's report has the feel of a hit piece fed to it by someone with a stake in the divorce. The man is one of our favorite people Hollywood, and he's probably one of yours too. But who knows?

In any case, the 73-year-old director (Colors, Easy Rider) wants custody of the couple's six-year-old daughter, Galen.
