Our weekly list of special movie events to check out in L.A.:

Thursday, Aug. 2

If you liked writer-director-star Julie Delpy's 2 Days in Paris but thought it was sorely lacking in the Chris Rock category and/or set on the wrong continent, USC's sneak preview of 2 Days in New York (which doesn't officially open in L.A. until Aug. 17) may be more to your liking. Tickets are free and may be reserved online at cinema.usc.edu/events. (Also, check out Karina Longworth's interview with Delpy.)

Friday, Aug. 3

The Shining may not be the best horror movie of all time — that title belongs to either Alien or Rosemary's Baby — but it's arguably the most purely frightening in the moment. Come to the Aero at 7:30 and stay forever … and ever … and ever …

Alternative plan: Witness the arcade as battleground in exploitation maestro Greydon Clark's Joysticks at midnight at Cinefamily (see GoLA).

Saturday, Aug. 4

The pictures may have gotten small, but you'd never know it by checking out Cinespia's summer series at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Billy Wilder's Sunset Blvd., one of the absolute best of all time, screens tonight at 9 p.m. (doors at 7:30).

Some movies deserve a chance based on their title alone. 1966's sci-fi comedy thriller Kiss the Girls and Make Them Die is such a film, and it's playing the New Beverly at midnight.

Sunday, Aug. 5

There's no place like the Aero, especially when it's playing The Wizard of Oz at 4 p.m. on a Sunday. End your weekend properly by seeing it the way all great films are meant to be viewed: on the biggest screen possible.
