This week, L.A. Weekly invites you on a journey into one of the most influential Rosetta Stones of obscure music: the legendary Nurse With Wound List. Originally compiled by three young music collectors and artists in London in 1979 (and expanded the following year), the NWW List has become a secret syllabus of strange sounds for fans around the world. Here are a few samples of the artists the List highlighted, from the better known (the Velvet Underground, etc.) to the incredibly obscure (Il Balletto di Bronzo, etc.). Take a dip into the sounds of some of these acts and keep going down the musical rabbit hole of the 290-plus (!?!) names on this Holy Grail of music-savant shopping lists.
