Co-founders Alice Cherng and Belinda Wei founded Cocobella Creamery in Hollywood four years ago and have remodeled and rebranded during the pandemic with a more diverse menu. Their new concept, Dear Bella Creamery, reopens on Sunday, September 5.

The bright and Instagram-friendly space at Fountain and Vine showcases the evolution of their all-natural approach to plant-based frozen treats, with new offerings like soft serve, milkshakes, Pup Cups for four-legged guests, nitro cold brew floats including root beer, frozen cakes and sandwiches.

Wei brings years of experience at the helm of pastry programs at Cafe Gratitude, The Springs LA, and Erewhon to her original recipes, including flavors inspired by the co-founders’ heritage like Black Sesame and Taiwanese Pineapple Cake, featuring buttery shortcake made in-house with butter-roasted pineapples originating from Wei’s dad’s hometown in Taichung City, Taiwan.

“Belinda and I are both of Taiwanese descent and developed our friendship over plant-based food,” Cherng, who is also a Certified Public Accountant, tells L.A. Weekly over a couple of scoops at the creamery. “When we created our flavors, we really wanted to include something related to the heritage we grew up with. The Taiwanese Pineapple cake and Lychee Raspberry Daiquiri are an homage to that and our childhoods.”

All of the 16 creamery flavors, fillings and toppings are made from scratch on the premises and are gluten-free, using a variety of alternative milk bases like oat and coconut using natural colorings. The Cookie Monsta, with pieces of chocolate chip and chocolate sandwich cookies, uses blue spirulina and the pink in the Strawberry Fields flavor comes from beet juice. For their ube flavor, they roast the purple yams themselves instead of using another vendor’s jam. There are also classic flavors like Moose Tracks and Cookies ‘N Cream. Handmade toppings and fillings include chocolate-coated bee-free Honeecomb made from tapioca syrup, sunflower butter cups, and slow-cooked raspberry jam.
