Writer-editor Dean Kuipers of the L.A. Times and, formerly, of the late L.A. CityBeat, has a new book out examining the radical animal-rights movement's Operation Bite Back, a campaign launched in the 1990s to attack fur farms and research facilities that used animal testing. Kuipers, who previously wrote an account of a deadly government campaign against two Michigan social dropouts (Burning Rainbow Farm), focuses on wilderness activist Rod Coronado, who last year was released from federal prison after pleading guilty to charges related to an arson fire that destroyed a San Diego-area construction site.

Coronado began his crusade by helping to block (and sink) whaling ships before embracing other forms of eco-sabotage and direct action. Later, he would be targeted by law enforcement for being an unofficial spokesman for the Earth Liberation Front.

Kuipers will read from his book Saturday, 5 p.m., at Book Soup, 8818 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood. (310) 659-3110, info@booksoup.co. After the reading we can expect a question or two and — who knows? — perhaps a little debate.
