Dax Riggs comes crawling out of the swamps of Louisiana to deliver tunes from his most recent solo album, Say Goodnight to the World. Ever since he was a teenager, the singer-guitarist has howled his moody imprecations with a series of heavy bands and more stripped-down projects, including metal outfit Acid Bath, metal-folk combo Agents of Oblivion and stoner-blues duo Deadboy & the Elephantmen. On Say Goodnight, Riggs comes off like a Southern cousin of Mark Lanegan, as he croons in a low baritone amid funereal organ on “See You All in Hell or New Orleans” and lightly strums the fragile acoustic ballad “You Were Born to Be My Gallows.” He draws on his stoner-rock roots on the album’s title track, on which he shouts into a bottomless well and summons an army of hard, bluesy guitars.
