Tonight at the Mayan Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, Duran Duran will take the stage in support of their latest album, All You Need is Now. This won't be a standard concert, it's actually part of American Express' Unstaged series, where bands are paired with directors for a live webcast that will be broadcast via Vevo on YouTube. Partnering with Duran Duran tonight is David Lynch.

After Lynch released the songs “Good Day Today” and “I Know” through the Sunday Best label, the band had asked him to remix their song “Girl Panic.”

“They really liked that and all of a sudden came this thing to direct the show with the America Express,” he said by phone.

Lynch has been working on the project for a little over a month.

“It's not like directing a film,” he said. “I'm not going to direct Duran Duran.”

Instead, Lynch said that the visuals will be “more abstract.”

“It's all kind of based on miniatures,” he said.

Lynch had to scale down the project from the original concept.

“It was going to be 50 cameras in a tent behind the stage and calling up those images that were being made in the tent, but it's too complicated,” he said. “You can't work that fast.”

Lynch describes the project as an “experiment,” one where he hopes there will be “many happy accidents.”

“I don't know where it will lead,” he said, “but I'm really having a good time doing it.”

While working on tonight's shows, Lynch has been listening to a lot of Duran Duran songs. We asked what his favorite was and he answered, “The Man Who Stole a Leopard.” The song features vocals from Kelis, who will be making a special appearance at tonight's show. We found a mash-up from YouTube user Nik531 featuring the song with clips from Duran Duran's '80s videos.
