65-Year-Old, 61-Year-Old Cyclists Killed, Multiple Injured in Traffic Accident near MC 85

GOODYEAR, AZ (March 3, 2023) – Saturday morning, a vehicle crash on Cotton Lane claimed the lives of David Kero and Karen Malisa. The deadly incident happened on February 25th at around 8:00 a.m. on the Cotton Lane bridge, just south of MC 85. According to responding officers, a group of cyclists was riding in the area when a pickup truck rammed them causing 19 people to be struck and obtain injuries. Preliminary investigation showed that the pickup truck was driven by 26-year-old Pedro Quintana-Lujan. Furthermore, authorities transported 11 people to the hospital. Meanwhile, 65-year-old Kero and 61-year-old Malisa later died of their injuries. Following the crash, officers have arrested Quintana-Lujan with multiple charges including two counts of manslaughter. And also, three counts of aggravated assault, 18 counts of endangerment, and two counts of causing serious injury or death by a moving violation. Quintana-Lujan told the police that “his steering was locked” but police are still confirming the events of the incident. In addition, he also told the police that he smoke marijuana 11 hours before the incident. At this time, the West Valley Cycling group mourns the loss of their loved ones.
