A man fatally shot in near a warehouse September 18 around 10:38 p.m. has been identified as 20-year-old David Canales. The shooting occurred near the corner of Esperanza and Emery Streets in the Boyle Heights area.

A group of party-goers, mostly teenagers, converted a loading dock in an industrial area into a dance party where Canales was a DJ, according to Detective Jose Ramirez of LAPD's Hollenbeck Division.

“It's quite common for young people to go into a vacant area like a warehouse and turn it into a dance party. It's kind of an out of sight, out of mind sort of thing,” Det. Ramirez said.

The victim's cousin witnessed a young Hispanic male suspect talk to Canales, pull out a gun and shoot him in the chest, according to Det. Ramirez. Paramedics were called to the scene and rushed Canales to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police are interviewing witnesses and searching for the gunman who remains at large.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact LAPD's Hollenbeck Division Detectives at (323) 526-3679.
