Update: The CHP responds, at the bottom.

The big question is, did David Beckham get special treatment from the California Highway Patrol after he rear ended a disabled vehicle in the carpool lane of the 405 freeway May 6?

Recordings of 911 calls to the CHP that day — obtained by TMZ — suggest he indeed might have gotten off scot-free:

Callers said the man in a black Cadillac SUC was “driving recklessly,” “speeding really bad” and pulling in and out of the carpool lane — a no-no — before slamming into that car.

The collision on the southbound 405 south of Artesia Boulevard in Torrance happened about 9:15 a.m. on a Friday morning.

Beckham's son was in the truck. The 40-year-old man in the Mitsubishi that was slammed by Beckham's Caddy complained of pain and was hospitalized, but Beckham and his son were not hurt.

The soccer star was not cited.

One 911 caller said he was “definitely speeding.”

We have a call into the CHP to find out why he wasn't cited. It's possible that officers felt there wasn't evidence at the scene to support claims that he was allegedly speeding or making unsafe lane changes.

Update: CHP Officer D. Conley tells the Weekly that officers have to see something in order to cite a driver. (Although, in cases of bad accidents, it will go back and track down witnesses). He says:

An officer has to actually be present in that type of event [for a citation].

Someone can't just call me and tell me that Dennis was speeding and then we cite you. The accident had nothing to do with his speed. Well, I wouldn't say that. It was a slight fender bender, that's pretty much it.
