Anyone who missed the sold-out Laguna Dance Festival performances this past April has a second chance to see two of April's headliners this weekend. Alonzo King LINES Ballet and Hubbard Street Dance are usually presented in the enormous culture centers, making an outing in this 420-seat theater a rare opportunity to see these top-notch companies up close and personal. Alonzo King LINES from San Francisco has a deserved reputation for King's choreography that seems to pour out of his extraordinary dancers. King is as interested in how a dancer moves into a position and out of it as the photo-pose peak of a movement sequence. The result retains ballet's illusion of flight while adding a heightened sense of the space around the dancer. Since current artistic director Glenn Edgerton left L.A. to helm the 34-year old Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, the company has enjoyed a resurgence with contributions like Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin's Three to Max which is on view this visit. The two companies share the stage on Saturday evening and for the Sunday matinee. The opening show Friday night belongs to SoCal's Backhausdance premiering an expanded version of Jennifer Backhaus' The Margin. Come early for pre-show discussions an hour before each show. For an extra $75, join the artists for a post-performance gala reception on Saturday night.
