A 14-year-old girl was fatally shot as she celebrated the 4th of July near downtown Los Angeles Sunday night, police said. She was hit as gang members fired on rivals about 10:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of South Toberman St. in the Pico-Union neighborhood, according to authorities.

“The girl was in a group, watching the fireworks, when a group of four or five suspects rode up on bicycles and began firing,'' Los Angeles police Sgt. Michael Mabie said. “We believe they were gang members shooting at rival gang members but they missed them and hit the girl.”

KTLA News reported that the girl was enjoying a 4th of July block party off Pico Boulevard — not far from Staples Center and the Los Angeles Convention Center — when the shooting occurred.

Coroner's officials identified the victim as Daisy Garcia, who was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Anyone with information about the attack was asked to call detectives Michael Arteaga or Christopher Linscomb at 213-484-3650.
