Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a traditional Mexican celebration where families honor their ancestral dead. It's normally celebrated from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, but Hollywood Forever Cemetery decided to hold its celebration on Saturday, Oct. 29, probably because you sell more tickets on a Saturday than on a Monday. Parking, as always, was a nightmare. The traffic was exacerbated by an Uber car that took out a fire hydrant on Santa Monica Boulevard. Maybe next year Hollywood Forever will designate a safe pickup zone for ride-shares.
The park was packed with people enjoying the music, dancing and altars honoring the memory of loved ones who have died. Sure, there were tacky people taking kissing selfies in front of the memorial to the victims of the Pulse shooting in Orlando, but the majority of the festival was filled with people looking to have a good time and enjoy a bit of cultural appropriation.
