Added: Sheriff's officials say the District Attorney's office this week charged the suspect “with Second Degree Murder, Felony DUI, & Hit and Run from a traffic collision.”

Here's a doozy of a tale out of scenic Lancaster.

Sheriff's officials say a drunk driving suspect allegedly hit and killed a pedestrian and, with a headlight out and blood on his car, then drove, tires screeching, the wrong way through a not-faraway DUI checkpoint as cops looked on, we would suspect, in disbelief.

Of course they gave chase and pulled the guy over. At the time …

… deputies didn't know there was a dead man laying in the road blocks away, but they soon began to suspect it when they spotted the blood on the 1996 Ford Mustang after the suspect was pulled over.

The alleged windshield.

The alleged windshield.

In fact authorities got on the radio and told fellow cops to follow the road — 10th Street West in Lancaster — from which the suspect came to see if there wasn't something bleeding in the street.

They found it: Although deputies tried to revive him, 50-year-old Curly Junior Ross was declared dead at the scene.

It all happened about 11:30 p.m. last Friday in the 800 block of West Avenue J (where the checkpoint was, although Ross was found on 10th near Avenue J-8). Why are they telling us a week later? We don't know.

Anyway, the driver, Isidro Peralta, a 24-year-old from nearby Little Rock, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence, and felony hit and run.

Added: Sheriff's officials want you to call them if maybe you witnessed any of this: 661-948-8466.

Peralta was due in court May 25.
