An unidentified 15-year-old boy at Crescenta Valley High either fell or jumped to his death today, just after the bell rang to end lunchtime, says Sergeant Debra Herman at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station.

(Earlier news stories indicated the victim was a girl.)

Preliminary reports show that there were “students all around” as the freshman made a three-story plunge…

… onto the concrete in the quad, Herman says.

The rest of the students were immediately called to the football field, and classes were cancelled for the rest of the day, reports Montrose Patch. And the Glendale News-Press talked to someone who witnessed the horrific scene:

Sinead Gray, who went to the school to pick up her brother at the campus, said he witnessed the immediate aftermath of the fall and described her body on the ground.

It happened during the lunch period and students crowded around the scene and on a pedestrian bridge above the body, Gray added.

The CVHS school administration then initiated “an evacuation to get students off the campus and home early,” district officials tell the paper.

Just after 2 p.m., a Glendale resident wrote on Twitter that “parent pick up line is crazy long!” but that “people are calm; news trucks and copters are everywhere.”

Another Twitter user wrote: “Just talked to my brother – girl just jumped off the 2000 bldg at #CVHS?! They let all the students go home.”

Herman tells us that investigators have not determined why the student fell from the building. However, she says sheriff's homicide detectives are on the scene to look into a possible suicide. Check back for more as the investigation continues.

Update: CVHS is a high-performing campus in the Glendale Unified School District. It enrolls almost 3,000 students, and scores well above the state average in the Academic Performance Index.

Strangely, the “Every 15 Minutes” program was just at the campus yesterday, performing its gruesome re-enactment of what a drunk-driving accident can look like. The photos of bloody corpses from that event are especially unsettling in light of today's tragedy.

Update: At an after-school press conference, sheriff's officials said this appears to have been a suicide. And the jumper may have been a sophomore, not a freshman. More from the News-Press:

Sheriff's Lt. John Corina said the 15-year-old got a running start before jumping off a ledge and to his death.

Update: One young man on Twitter tells LAist that the victim “was in my english class last year. i just thought he was just a shy kid.” He describes the boy as being “really skinny” and having “long hair.”
