After seeing the highest rate of COVID-19 infections toward the beginning of January, L.A. Public Heath Officials said there is now a 67% drop in positive cases.

The peak of infections came on January 8, when L.A. County averaged more than 15,000 daily positive COVID-19 cases. As of January 27, the 7-day average dropped to 5,093 cases per day.

There has also been a 30% decline in COVID-19 related hospitalizations, as a January 7 peak saw a three-day average of 8,046 Angelenos hospitalized. As of January 27, the three-day was 5,617.

“We’re glad to get back to slowing the surge, but… we have a long way to go,” Director of L.A. Public Health Barbara Ferrer said, Monday.

Ferrer also noted that in September, the county had lowered its daily cases to fewer than 1,000 per day, which was the lowest since the start of the pandemic. The lowest average of hospitalizations came in early November, where the county saw fewer than 900 hospitalizations, as was the case for average deaths, which was 13 per day in November.

“With everyone’s help, we hope to get back to these pre-surge numbers,” Ferrer said. “Every action we take to protect ourselves and others, ends up saving lives.”
