Corey Helford Gallery Celebrates Fifth Year with "Zero to Sixty"

Friday night, Corey Helford Gallery celebrated a milestone with an opening party for its mega-showcase, Zero to Sixty: Five Year Anniversary Gala Group Exhibition, which refers to the gallery's 60 months in operation, not to mention the rapid acceleration of the gallery's influence on the local art scene. Unveiling over 50 pieces that were custom-made for the occasion, Corey Helford invited artists and art-lovers to the kind of booze and sugar-fueled affair where everyone's your friend on Facebook, but no one's your friend in real life.

Surprise special-guest DJ Alf Alpha manned the decks as the architecture-inspired Coolhaus ice cream truck dished out tasty treats — as if the bottomless bowls of chocolate-covered pretzels, peanut-butter cups, and Trader Joe's Yogurt Stars weren't enough.

Dozens of the show's artists were on hand to pay tribute to the gallery, including self-defined “pervasive artist” Gary Baseman; creator of Julius the Monkey, Paul Frank; and two of the people behind the show's three limited-edition prints, Luke Chueh and Sylvia Ji.

But the artists themselves weren't the only ones around — co-curator of MoCA's Art in the Streets Roger Gastman stopped by, as did Johnny Galecki, aka Leonard Hofstadter on The Big Bang Theory (and Darlene's boyfriend on Roseanne). Adam Jones, Grammy Award-winning guitarist for Tool and part-time photographer, also made an appearance, which made sense, since he's known to draw a comic or two in his time.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the Scott Brothers, who busted out signature badass moves from their steady gig at the MGM Grand's Crazy Horse Paris. Participating artist Natalia Fabia had this to say: “The Scott Brothers are amazing. They are so in sync and robotic. I was transfixed!”

But the real winners of the night were the proprietors of Corey Helford Gallery, Jan and Bruce Helford, because they sold almost half their paintings before the opening. Here's to another rapid-fire five years, kids.
