Coolio Plans to Invest Music Catalog Proceeds in Cooking Show and Cookbook Series

Apparently, while we were pondering the worth of investing a cool six figures in Coolio's entire music catalog (that's 123 songs total for $134,000 to $225,000 on auction), the 50-year-old rapper has already decided what he's doing with the proceeds. According to The Guardian, he's planning to invest in a bid to be the next Guy Fieri — or something like that.

This means, mostly, an online cooking show and a cookbook series — both of which are called Cookin' with Coolio. They specialize in what the rapper calls “Ghetto Gourmet” cuisine, which includes fusion food like “Ghettalian.” (The names will either sound familiar or not, depending on how well you're acquainted with Coolio's lyricism).

The first time you likely saw Coolio, born Leon Ivey, Jr., don a toque was probably in 2008, when Oxygen picked up his reality show Coolio's Rules. The short (6 episodes total) and short-lived (the show wasn't renewed) series featured, among other goings-on, the man's foray into catering.

That year, he launched Cookin' with Coolio, the show, on YouTube; his cookbook Cookin' with Coolio: 5 Star Meals at a Star Price came out the following year in late 2009.

And while you might be tempted to write off his efforts, consider that Coolio's cookbook has received 4 1/2 stars out of 5 from 83 customer reviews on Amazon and his cooking videos have generated a considerable number of thumbs-up on YouTube. Food Network and Cooking Channel have made cooks and chefs into celebrities; imagine what they can do with one who's got a Grammy. It's more than what could be said for Fieri when he first signed on.
