Eat like the ancient Romans at Getty Villa's class, “The Pleasure of Empire: Food and Cooking in Ancient Rome,” held this Thursday and again on Saturday at the museum. Historian Andrew Dalby and chef Sally Grainger, authors of “The Classical Cookbook,” will discuss the dishes of the Roman table, based on ingredients that were brought from throughout the empire at great expense. Delicacies from the historic culinary text Apicius and other sources will be served, including grilled mackerel with fennel, goat cheese-preserved lemon crostini, and dates stuffed with poasted pinenuts and honey.

Also at the Getty Villa will be a three-part class in “Wines of the Black Sea,” where ancient wine-making began. Wine authority Barbara Baxter will lead a tasting of contemporary Georgian wines, which trace their source to antiquity. As a bonus, participants will tour the Getty exhibit, “The Golden Graves of Vani,” which opens this week.

The Pleasure of Empire: Food and Cooking in Ancient Rome; Thursday, July 23, at 7 p.m., and will be repeated Saturday, July 25, at 5 p.m; price is $35.
