LAist reports that the L.A. City Council's Transportation Committee is looking at banning cyclists from riding on sidewalks. On the one hand, this is good news for the city's beaten-down pedestrians — on the other, though, it would force a lot of young and inexperienced cyclists into L.A.'s hellish streets. According to poster Danielle Directo, one suggestion to come out from last week's meeting recommended the establishment of bike paths that are barricaded, presumably to separate cyclists from pedestrians and traffic — although that would seem to create a bigger mess than the problems it would solve.

The post quotes a member of the L.A. County Bicycle Coalition as calling for education programs that would “be geared at low-income Spanish speakers, many of whom are using the sidewalks to ride.” Earlier this year Councilman Tom LaBonge proposed laying some rules on sidewalk riders, but not banning them. The discussions resume this Wednesday, June 24.
