The city of Los Angeles is opening seven public facilities as shelters from this week's heat, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office announced Tuesday. The San Fernando Valley shelters will be open Tuesday and Wednesday, the days the National Weather Service has stated are subject to an “excessive heat watch” that covers the Valley, the Santa Monica Mountains and the San Gabriel Valley.

The “cooling facilities” include:

-Canoga Park Senior Citizen Center, 7326 Jordan Avenue, Canoga Park

-North Hollywood Senior Citizen Center, 11430 Chandler Boulevard, North Hollywood

-Sepulveda Rec Center/Mid-Valley Senior Citizen Center, 8801 Kester Avenue, Panorama City

-Sunland Park Senior Citizen Center, 8640 Fenwick Street, Sunland

-Sylmar Recreation Center, 13109 Borden Avenue, Sylmar

-Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Senior Citizen Center, 5040 Van Nuys Boulevard, Sherman Oaks

-Wilkinson Senior Citizen Center, 8956 Vanalden Avenue, Northridge

At the same time, the mayor's office advised L.A. residents to try to conserve energy so that the power grid is not overburdened. It also asked citizens to check on elderly neighbors to make sure they're okay during the heatwave.

More information on the cooling centers can be had by dialing 311 or 213-228-7000.
