LAist and L.A. Observed are among those questioning why the L.A. City Council, in the depths of an economic sinkhole, voted to waive $3,000 in city fees for the Shrine Auditorium celebration of L. Ron Hubbard's birthday. Zach Behrens quotes from Councilman Bernard Parks' motion:

“This annual celebration recognizes the achievements of Mr. Hubbard, Founder of the Scientology religion, and honors Churches of Scientology internationally. The event is attended by over 7,000 local Scientologists, their families and friends, as well as by representatives of other religions and professions.”

Reason enough to cut services to schools and the city's needy? Don't ask councilmembers Eric Garcetti, Tom LaBonge, Ed Reyes and Bill Rosendahl — they weren't there for the vote.
