So don't get a DUI on the beer holiday that Mexico doesn't even consider to be that important. The weekend will really just be an extended amateur hour out there. And there's going to be a massive full moon Saturday. The loons will be out.
And so will the cops:
The LAPD stated this week that Cinco De Mayo is a “joyous” holiday that needn't be defiled by drunken motoring:
Cinco de Mayo has become a joyous day for many Angelanos to honor and celebrate Mexico's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Cinco de Mayo is day to honor the heritage and pride of Mexicans throughout North America. Unfortunately, it is also a night with unnecessary dangers when community members decide to drink and drive.

And so, to ensure the safety of bystanders, the following checkpoints and drunk-driver saturation patrols are happening — starting tonight:

-Tonight, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., there will be a saturation patrol in the Van Nuys area.
-Tomorrow (Friday), from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., there will be a DUI checkpoint at Vermont Avenue and 6th Street in Koreatown.
(Koreans have the coolest way of doing Patron shots — with sweet coffee grinds. You should try it. But don't drive afterward).
Tomorrow (Friday), from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., there will be a DUI checkpoint at Hollywood Boulevard and Gower Street in the heart of Drunktown.
Saturday, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., there will be a DUI checkpoint on Cahuenga Boulevard and Broadlawn Drive near Universal City.
Sunday, from noon to 8 p.m., there will be a saturation patrol in the LAPD's 77th Street Division area, which covers the core of South L.A.
Sunday, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., there will be a checkpoint at Imperial Highway and Main Street near Watts.
