The weather outside might not be that frightful, but a red light in your rearview mirror is rarely delightful.

That's no holiday light.

Police from across Los Angeles County are entering their annual “maximum enforcement period” for the Christmas holiday. The operations are scheduled to take place from tonight through Sunday (with special enforcement to return for New Year's Eve and the subsequent weekend).

“Due to the increase in drunk driving–related fatalities around the holidays each year, law enforcement agencies across America will be actively searching for and arresting drunk drivers,” the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement.

Authorities want you to know they're out there. They're even giving you details about some checkpoints and special patrols. The idea is that if you know about them, maybe you won't get behind the wheel after one too many. Maybe this will save lives.

Here's the info:

-Tonight the California Highway Patrol's maximum enforcement period for the Christmas holiday begins. That means extra CHP cruisers will be on the highways of L.A. County.

-Friday a DUI patrol will hit the streets of Irwindale.

-Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight, an LAPD checkpoint will be up and running at Slauson and Western avenues in South L.A.

-Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., a checkpoint will be awaiting your arrival at Woodman Avenue and Parthenia Street in Panorama City.

-Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., a checkpoint will be happening at Cahuenga Boulevard and Broadlawn Drive in the Universal City area.

-Saturday DUI patrols will strike in the cities of El Monte, Monterey Park and Pomona.

-Sunday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., an LAPD “saturation patrol,” which includes extra police on the streets, will hit the department's Van Nuys Division.
