Can’t get enough of the Hello Kitty craze in L.A. lately? Here’s a scholarly look at the ubiquitous cat icon. In conjunction with the retrospective exhibit, “Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty,” co-curator and author Christine Yano discusses her latest book, Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty’s Trek Across the Pacific. Yano, a professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, examines the history of one of Japan’s biggest imports and the character’s influence on Western pop culture beyond young girls. Via interviews, Yano also looks at the “cute-cool” trend of kawaii and how this has affected Japanese culture.
