Bicyclist Fatally Struck in Hit-and-Run Accident near Reems Road

GLENDALE, AZ (January 6, 2022) – Sunday night, 29-year-old Chris Owan was killed in a bicycle hit-and-run crash on Northern Avenue.

According to the Maricopa Country Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred just east of Reems Road around 7:00 p.m.

Per reports, Alexandra Mendez was driving a blue 2017-2018 Ford Fusion when she struck Owan. Upon impact, she immediately fled the scene westbound on Northern Avenue.

Paramedics responded and transported Owan to a local hospital where he later died.

The Fusion was found abandoned in Buckeye and had significant damage on the front grill and headlights, as well as the front passenger side mirror and windshield.

Mendez was then booked into jail and accused of manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

At this time, an active investigation to determine further details is still currently underway. Once available, more details will be provided.
