The California Highway Patrol today plans to haul out a bus and big-rig of the same type that collided head-on near Orland last week to investigate that fatal crash.

The department will use traffic breaks and re-create segments of the accident, which killed 10, including five L.A. area high schoolers on a college-bound tour, on the very same stretch of highway, interstate 5, where the collision occurred Thursday, CHP Officer Tracy Hoover told us.

The test …

… aims to check the brakes of both vehicles to determine how they react, she said. “I believe there will be eye-level cameras mounted to see what the drivers saw,” Hoover said.

The department says in a statement that investigators with its Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team will be looking to “obtain information regarding braking, visibility and other vehicle characteristics, as part of the ongoing investigation.”

At a 1 p.m. news conference near the site of the crash, test results will be revealed and 911 calls about the collision will be released, the CHP states.

The bus, headed to Humboldt State University, was struck by a FedEx big-rig about 5:40 p.m. Thursday, CHP officials said. It appeared the southbound Fed-Ex truck veered into northbound lanes after crossing a grassy median.

Both vehicles erupted in flames.

Investigators say there were no indications the FedEx driver hit the brakes – there were no skid marks – or that the truck was on fire before impact, as two witnesses in a Nissan sideswiped by the big rig said.
