A dad, a driver and another passenger were arrested over the weekend for allegedly stuffing his kids in the trunk of a Cadillac. In summer. In San Bernardino County. The three had been drinking, cops suspect.

Really. That, at least, is what the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department says:

A witness told cops yesterday at about 10:44 p.m. that children were spotted in the trunk of a Cadillac at a Baker's restaurant drive-thru near Base Line Street and Palm Avenue, deputies said.

Cops spotted the car headed for a U-turn on Base Line and stopped it, according to a sheriff's statement.

First impression, according to deputies: The smell of alcohol. Allegedly. They asked driver April Burgo, 32, to open the trunk, and “she hesitated,” the sheriff's department states.

When she finally popped it, a 6-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl were found inside crying, cops said.

Daddy Richard Burgo was also in the car, also smelling of the drink, cops allege. Same with a passenger, Brandon Rampani, 33, deputies said:

All three suspects were under the influence of alcoholic beverages and deputies believe they all had knowedge of the children that were found locked in the trunk.

It's not clear how long the kids were back there, but the three are from Escondido, about 90 minutes to the south, in San Diego County, cops said.

The trio was arrested on suspicion of child cruelty. The children were, thankfully, okay.
