After leaving his post as head chef at rustic, farm-to-table restaurant Barnyard in March, chef Jesse Barber announced he'll be staying in Venice with a new retail/restaurant concept, Dudley Market, which is now open within spitting distance of the beach and famous Boardwalk.

“My goal is to create a spot that has great quality products, in a charming and friendly environment,” Barber said when he announced plans for Dudley back in April. “It's my way of providing an everyday luxury to our community, and when I say 'luxury' I mean having a great cup of coffee and perfectly prepared egg after a morning surf, or being able to have organic, chef-quality ingredients in your home pantry.”

The historic exposed-brick-and-wood space on Dudley Avenue features one wall of retail shelves stocked with a curated selection of culinary and lifestyle goods along with a selection of grab-and-go items. Dudley Market continues the relationships Barber built with local farmers and vendors while at Barnyard by featuring three meals a day in the 20-seat dining room, which during dining hours becomes an intimate restaurant focusing on seasonal California dishes. (The retail space also sells items used in the kitchen, such as Sfoglini Pasta, Community Grains, Ritual Chocolate, Little Branch Granola, California Olive Ranch, Jacobsen Salt Co. and more.)

Offerings will rotate seasonally, but the opening menus include everything from croque madame to pork loin and lamb belly, to an Italian cured-meat sandwich called the Monday. Coffee and espresso is from Heart roasters and the bar area will pour organic and biodynamic wines all day.

“It [was] a wonderful two years at Barnyard becoming a part of the Venice community,” said Barber, who before joining Barnyard was the chef at Tasting Kitchen. “With Dudley Market, I’m looking forward to taking what I’ve learned and designing a space tailored to our needs and bringing something new to Venice.”

Hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with breakfast and lunch served until 2 p.m. and dinner served from 5 to 10 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, a brunch menu will be served from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
