As he was answering a knock on his door in the early morning, Charles Gonzales was shot dead in the doorway of his residence in the 800 block of Green Avenue.

According to City News Service, the 51-year-old was cooking breakfast when he heard knocking at the front door.

LAPD officers arrived at 5:15 a.m. and found Gonzales lying in the doorway with multiple gunshot wounds to the head, said Ed Winter of the coroner's office.

He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crime by LAPD authorities.

The Los Angeles Times later reported that no neighbor inside the apartment complex heard or saw any shooting and that a suspect and a motive remain unknown.

The death occurred just a block away from Loyola Law School.
