French-Moroccan restaurant, Chameau, located in the Fairfax district, and originally opened in Silver Lake in 2001, reopened last Saturday as Chameau Deli Bar. Prices have been slashed and the restaurant is much more casual than its previous design. Co-owners Kelly Klemovich and chef Adel Chager decided to keep the basic idea the same, but make it more into a deli, “like Le Pain Quotidien,” said Klemovich. So, why the drastic change? “It's been 10 years. Time for a change,” she said.

The renovation, which spanned about three months, involved breaking down a dividing wall inside the restaurant to create a larger, more open dining room– though some of the old Chameau decor remains. “It is not just a Moroccan restaurant anymore,” said Klemovich. Menu staples such as the lamb shank will no longer be found at the restaurant, but other Moroccan dishes, like the couscous salad and Merguez sausage sandwich are still available. A stone's throw away from Canter's, Chameau Deli Bar, which is surrounded by sleepy furniture stores and restaurants that rarely appear open, seems to be one of the only other bright lights left on the block.
