Celebrate the Monkees at the Greek: Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith carried the torch for as long as they could, but they’re now ready to call time on the Monkees. Davy Jones died in 2012, and Peter Tork followed him off of this mortal plane in 2019. Each one was a hammer blow for the fans and for music in general. But Dolenz and Nesmith gamely soldiered on for a couple of years. Clearly, enough is enough.

Monkees fans shouldn’t be too sad; both will likely continue performing solo shows, and pepper the set the Monkees classics. And this final Los Angeles show will be a great way to celebrate the legacy of a band that, sure, started out as an assembled group of actor/musicians on a TV set but quickly morphed into a real band with very real songs.

The 2020 live album The Monkees Live: The Mike and Micky Show is, for now, the final Monkees release, a show under the Monkees name by these two, saved for posterity. Way back in 2014, this writer asked Dolenz if it was weird to be performing without Jones. He replied: “Well, it was. We did a couple of tours since he passed. The first one was definitely weird. That was not long after he passed. It wasn’t the official Davy Jones memorial tour, but we definitely had the tribute and paid homage. Yeah, it was tough, especially when we did ‘Daydream Believer.’ Mike Nesmith actually came up with the wonderful idea of having the crowd sing it.”

“We always incorporate the big hits. I think the fans really want to hear those songs as they remember, and we all sort of agree on that. When we’re not doing the big hits, we have a few options. We can dig deep into the album cuts, which we have and which we do frequently.”

Celebrate the Monkees at the Greek: The event takes place at 7 p.m. on Sunday, November 14 at the Greek Theatre.
