The last time I saw Donald Glover, he was receiving the Montreal Just for Laughs comedy festival's inaugural Rising Comedy Star of the Year award, expressing his gratitude while simultaneously apologizing for an obvious lack of sleep. A few hours prior he'd been deejaying at a guerrilla party thrown in a car wash by comedic rabble-rouser Doug Stanhope. Earlier that evening he'd also been feted as one of Variety’s 2010 “10 Comics to Watch” and performed his rave-reviewed one-man festival show, Gross! Just a year ago he'd won an ensemble-cast spot alongside Joel McHale and Chevy Chase on NBC's Community, and only two years back he'd been a staff writer on the Emmy-winning 30 Rock, a gig he'd landed in 2006 while still a senior at NYU. Not bad for a guy who began his career in 2005 as a writing intern for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, a guy who will be turning all of 27 next month, and a guy who still manages to spend his free hours working with the sketch group Derrick Comedy, rapping under the name Childish Gambino and seeing his independent films debut at Sundance.
