A cat that had its snout and paws covered in red tape was having trouble breathing when it was abandoned at an L.A. area animal shelter today. (See a disturbing photo of the cat bound up after the jump).

Vets from the county's Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control quickly got the tape off,but officials are still astonished at the level of cruelty displayed by the animal's tormentor(s):

The cat, since named Amigo, was found abandoned in a box in the lower level parking area of the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center this morning, county officials said in a statement:

… An animal control officer was shocked to find the cat gasping for air.

A medical team removed the red tape and now Amigo is recovering. After he's 100 percent, he'll be up for adoption. If you're interested you can email Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control here.

I can't imagine why someone would do this to this cat. Animal cruelty is heart breaking, intolerable, and usually a precursor to human violence.
