Rudy del Campo, who played one of the Sharks in the film version of West Side Story, opened Casita del Campo opened in 1962. The iconic pink Silver Lake fixture, which  serves Mexican food in a romantic dining room with red leather booths,will mark its 58th anniversary on Friday, May 15 — the same day L.A.’s stay-at-home order is currently scheduled to be lifted.

While the current COVID-19 pandemic has hit the restaurant community hard, the Casita is still standing the test of time by serving take away versions of classics like their albondigas and lentil soups, enchiladas, fajitas, quesadillas and salads. There’s one bartender on each shift creating Casita Del Campo’s classic margaritas, as well as fresh strawberry, banana and ginger versions, and other classic cocktails for delivery and takeout via Postmates, Grubhub, and Caviar. “Community spirit forever, that’s what it’s all about,” owner Robert Del Campo tells L.A. Weekly. “Our sadness is the restaurant  being open without our wonderful in-house customers. This place exists solely for our community and we celebrate united together,  even if we’re not physically side by side. We will have a huge celebration when we can all come together again, not only to celebrate our anniversary but  for getting through this crisis with love and patience.”

In an additional effort to keep the neighborhood Hyperion Avenue favorite  afloat, Casita Del Campo “Love Masks” are now available on the restaurant’s website  for $20 plus a $5 shipping and handling fee; if you’re local, they can also be picked up. The Del Campo family partnered with local wardrobe stylist and designer Estevan Ramos to create safety “Love Masks” to help support Casita Del Campo and Estevan Ramos during this time.

The masks are made in Ramos’ studio with bottom weight fabric that come in both men and women sizes adorned with a LOVE signature Casita Del Campo pin attached.
