A Latino man who died January 4 after suffering multiple gunshot wounds at a New Year's Day house party in Valley Glen has been identified as 28-year-old Carlos Ibanez.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Ibanez had no gang affiliation; however, LAPD detectives think the shooters may have been involved in gang activity. Their drive-by shooting had a few victims at the party, but Ibanez — who was hit multiple times in the limbs and torso — was the only one to die.

The 28-year-old was standing in a group of friends outside the residence, located on the 6200 block of Babcock Avenue, when a vehicle described by witnesses as an “older model two-door Honda or Toyota that was either black or dark blue” pulled up at about 10:50 p.m. Someone inside the car shot a round of bullets into the crowd before zooming off into the night.

City News Service reported at the time that a barrage of calls came into the North Hollywood police station, telling of the gunfire. Paramedics ended up transporting a total of five house-party victims to various hospitals after they arrived.

Ibanez remained critical at a hospital in Mission Hills for three days. He died on January 4 at 8:43 p.m.

Anyone with additional information about the drive-by is urged to contact Detectives Castro or O'Donnell at (818) 623-4045.

Note: Due to technical difficulties, the LA Weekly's archive of all homicides within Los Angeles city limits was discontinued near the end of last year. As of April 4, we have been rolling out the 2011 homicides, one by one, and will continue until our “Murder was the Case” archive is up to date. Thanks for your patience.
