Get ready for a cuteness overload that nobody saw coming. Care Bears and Pudgy Penguins, two of the most beloved characters across generations, are joining forces for a western-themed collectible collection that’s equal parts nostalgic and internet-culture cool.

Dropping December 12 exclusively through Playground, the Toronto based collectibles studio known for premium, limited edition releases, the collaboration reimagines five iconic characters in frontier inspired outfits, complete with tiny cowboy hats, patterned bandanas, and desert color palettes.

A Match Made in Collectible Heaven

On paper, Care Bears and Pudgy Penguins seem like an unlikely pairing. Care Bears, the emotional icons of the 1980s, have represented warmth, kindness, and optimism for over 40 years. Pudgy Penguins, meanwhile, are the adorable faces of modern internet culture, commanding a devoted following of over 1.6 million fans on social media.

But according to Bart Lipski, founder of Playground, that’s exactly why it works.

“We look for overlaps between what your parents loved and what the internet loves now,” Lipski mentions. “When you can bridge that gap authentically, magic happens.”

The collection features five characters, each bringing their signature personality to the Wild West aesthetic. From Tenderheart Bear sporting a sheriff’s badge to Pudgy Penguins dressed in frontier gear, every detail has been carefully crafted to honor both brands while creating something entirely new.

Premium Design Meets Blind-Box Fun

The collectibles are manufactured by TOYMAK3RS, the sought after toy design studio behind premium collectibles for Netflix, Adidas, Fortnite, and other major entertainment brands. Known for treating toy design like haute couture, TOYMAK3RS brings museum quality craftsmanship to every piece.

Each blind box contains one of five characters with equal rarity distribution, meaning collectors have a fair shot at completing the full set without the frustration of chase variants. The packaging itself is designed to feel premium, minimal, and Instagram-worthy, optimized for the unboxing moment that fans love to share online.

“Unboxing is theater,” says Lipski. “We want that moment to feel as special as what’s inside.”

Digital Meets Physical

Every collectible includes Jellybean technology—a digital authentication system embedded in each piece. Collectors can scan their toy with a smartphone to verify authenticity, unlock exclusive behind the scenes content, and access digital rewards tied to their collection.

It’s a modern solution to an old problem: how do you know what you’re buying is real? With counterfeit collectibles flooding the market, Jellybean provides instant peace of mind.

“You shouldn’t need to be an expert to know if your collectible is authentic,” Lipski argues. “Scan it. Verify it. That’s it.”

The Playground Phenomenon

Since launching earlier this year, Playground has carved out a unique space in the collectibles world. Operating on a bi-weekly drop schedule, the studio releases limited collaborations that blend art, design, and storytelling, positioning each launch as a cultural moment rather than just another product release.

Some previous Playground drops have featured partnerships with major entertainment properties and digital brands, each selling out within hours of launch. The Care Bears x Pudgy Penguins collaboration marks Playground’s most mainstream crossover to date, bringing together legacy IP and contemporary internet culture in a way that appeals to both nostalgic millennials and Gen Z collectors.

Early response has been overwhelming. Within 72 hours of the announcement, over 50,000 people joined the waitlist, a testament to the pull of both brands and Playground’s growing reputation as a taste-maker in the collectibles space.

How to Get One

The Care Bears x Pudgy Penguins western collection launches December 12, 2025, exclusively at playgrounddrops.com. Given the demand and limited production run, fans are encouraged to join the waitlist early.

As Lipski puts it: “This isn’t about mass production. It’s about creating something people will want to keep forever and maybe pass down someday.”
