See our latest: Nathan Campbell Charged in Venice Boardwalk Rampage.

A rampage in which a black sedan that appeared to purposefully run down several people on the Venice boardwalk today was now the scene of an LAPD Robbery Homicide-Division investigation, officials said.

The elite detectives took over the case as one of 12 people injured was said to be in grave condition, Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department told the Weekly:

It was reported about 6:01 p.m. on Ocean Front Walk near Dudley Avenue, Humphrey said:

“Witnesses described this black sedan as moving purposefully,” he said.

Two people, including the gravely injured patient, were in critical condition, he said; two were serious, the others were minor. Two victims refused to be taken to hospitals, Humphrey said. The others were transported.

The worst of the injured, the gravely ill person, “was fighting for their life,” he said.

An LAPD official told the Weekly that it didn't appear there was a suspect in custody.

It was a busy summer day on the boardwalk. The app maker Snapchat distributed an image, apparently taken from its nearby security camera, of a black Dodge Avenger sedan that might have been the car involved:

[Update at 10:07 p.m.]: LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman tells the Weekly that one person has died at a hospital following the rampage.

He also confirmed that a suspect has been detained in Santa Monica, and that a dark-colored Dodge Avenger has also been located.

That suspect was being interviewed by Robbery-Homicide detectives, the lieutenant said.

A witness told KCAL 9 that the car involved in the collisions appeared to swerve purposefully left and right to allegedly strike as many people as possible.

[Update at 1:18 p.m. Sunday]: Police arrested that suspect on suspicion of murder last night. He was identified as 38-year-old Nathan Louis Campbell, Officer Rosario Herrera told us.

According to sheriff's inmate data he was booked at 2:43 a.m. and was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Herrera confirmed the victim was a 32-year-old from Italy.

The Italian newspaper Reppublica ID'd her as Alice Gruppioni.

It says she was on her honeymoon with her husband and ran a family business in Rastignano, Italy. Her father is an entrepreneur and former vice president of the Balogna pro soccer team, the report says.

She was married days ago to Christian Casadei, who was also hit by the Dodge and hospitalized, the paper says.
