Backers of a recall effort targeting Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are hoping to raise money for the campaign in … Arizona. That's right: The Los Angeles Daily News' Rick Orlov reports that the group is actively seeking donations from Arizona contributors miffed by the mayor's and the City Council's support of a boycott against the state over its controversial immigration law.

“We think they might be angry at the city over the boycott and help us out,” organizer David R. Hernandez told the Daily News. “We know the recall will not be successful unless we raise between $500,000 and $1 million to hire circulators. It's hard when we are limited to contributions of $1,000.”

The recall so far has gotten little traction, even as the mayor and the City Council — facing the specter of thousands of unpopular layoffs to pare down an even less-popular $585 million deficit — have been against the political ropes lately.

The Daily News states the effort has only raised $3,000 and collected a few hundred signatures.

The Arizona law allows police there to inquire and verify the residency status of suspects they stop. The City Council, concerned that the law will be used to discriminate against Latinos, voted to have the city boycott Arizona businesses.
