To quote Craig Claiborne, Calvin Trillin is more than just a guy who sometimes writes about food, but “the Walt Whitman of American eats.” Trillin, a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1963, a longtime columnist for Time and The Nation, and the author of many books and articles and columns and poems and lots of other things, will be in town on Wednesday, September 21, to talk about this and that with another very funny guy, Kevin Nealon (SNL, Weeds, etc.).

Trillin, whose latest book, Quite Enough of Calvin Trillin: Forty Years of Funny Stuff, comes out in two weeks, will be “in conversation,” which I guess just means that they'll make it up as they go along, with Nealon at Writers Bloc in Beverly Hills.

If you're the sort of person who spends hot days eating bowls of ice cream over the pages of one Trillin book, The Tummy Trilogy, say, then taking another to a BBQ joint (Trillin having eaten and written more and better about barbecue than anybody has any right to), then you'll probably want to bring whichever of your woefully stained books you can find with you. Why not.

Writers Bloc is a nonprofit series, now in its 16th season. For tickets, which are $20, and reservations, go to writersblocpresents.com. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. Maybe eat first, because listening to people discuss food on an empty stomach (especially in Beverly Hills, hardly the BBQ epicenter of Los Angeles) is not fun.
