California has been derided as a high-tax state.

But maybe we need those tax revenues to pay for our own business. Because, according to a new report from the personal finance site WalletHub, the federal government sure isn't delivering for the Golden State.

In fact, California ranked among the 10 states least dependent on Uncle Sam for cash, jobs and support, according to the analysis:

We ranked seventh among the American states least dependent on the federal government. A WalletHub representative broke down some other rankings for us:

-California is 14th when it comes to seeing a return on the federal income tax locals pay.
-The state ranks 13th in generating the highest tax revenue independent of federal taxes.
-We're 13th in “least federal employees per-capita.”

With 38 million people, we could be our own, large nation. And it looks like we'd be able to pay for it, too. We have the second-highest taxes in the nation, next to New York, the site says.

The site says we have low federal dependency and “high GDP” (for gross domestic product, or commercial output). As it is we get .94 cents back for every tax dollar we send to Uncle Sam, according to WalletHub.

Interestingly, those more-conservative “red states” that hate “big government?” They're much more dependent on the federal government than Democrat-leaning blue states like California, the site says.

In fact the state most dependent on Uncle Sam (and, seemingly, the kindness of blue-state strangers), is Mississippi, according to the analysis.
