Los Angeles bars have been ordered to shut down by Governor Gavin Newsom due to the “rising spread of of COVID-19.”

Newsom tweeted out the order to shutter bars Sunday. It also included Fresno, Imperial, Kern, Kings, San Joaquin and Tulare counties. While not ordered, Contra Costa, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Stanislaus and Ventura counties were “recommended” to shut down their bars as well.

L.A. bars, along with several other businesses, were allowed to reopen June 19. L.A.’s rising rate of positive COVID-19 cases were being monitored by the state, however, with Newsom saying on June 22 that he was prepared to revert back to stricter lockdown orders “if necessary.”

Since the last updated numbers on Friday, Los Angeles County reported 95,371 positive cases with 3,285 deaths and 8,129 hospitalizations (not including Long Beach and Pasadena). The highest number of reported cases have come from ages 18-40 — 37,045 — while the Hispanic community accounted for 30 percent of positive cases.
